Bio

Liz Barker is an Australian artist working predominantly with acrylics and mixed media on canvas.

Liz’s art adventures began in 1995, during her studies at the Queensland College of Art, Brisbane, where she completed a Bachelor of Fine Arts, majoring in Intermedia. Movement and change has always been the focus of her work, and in those early years Liz’s practice was inspired greatly by travel and adventure. After university she spent many years travelling, gathering stimulation through photographs, drawings, and life experience.

In 1999 Liz moved to Bangkok and started an artists’ cooperative, based around her studio/gallery, where she lived, worked and exhibited. She traveled extensively in the region, and curated and exhibited in a number of exhibitions during this time, including her first solo show.

She returned to Australia in 2001 to prepare for her first Australian solo show, for which she received an Arts Queensland Grant.

These days Liz’s artistic inspiration is derived from the cyclical rhythms of nature, both human and environmental. She finds unending inspiration in the diversity and movements of local beaches, natural waterways, bush lands, landscapes and people in the Byron Bay region, where she has recently settled.

Her latest body of work is drawn quite directly from the Belongil Creek where she lives. Liz has been working on a series of creek dippings. Where, using her canvas, the creek surface and a method of relief printmaking, she captures the myriad of different floating surface qualities of the tidal waters directly onto her canvas.

One of these subtle but striking works was awarded FIRST PRIZE at the ocean shores Art Expo in 2013
